I started CrossFit in January 2013. When I started, I could not even run 50 meters!
Fast forward to July 2014, when I competed in my first fitness competition and came in third place! I’m now setting records in powerlifting! I am a woman in my mid-50s, and I am here to tell you that CrossFit Coveted is for people of every age and every ability. The people and coaches here are very supportive and encouraging and they will do everything they can to help you reach your goals. Try it out, you won’t be disappointed. If I can do it, you can do it too!

Before I started with CrossFit, I tried various home exercise programs P90X (slow!), Insanity (insane!) but doing it on my own was isolating. I didn’t feel encouragement or the support that I feel being a part of CrossFit Coveted. Even though I was able to complete various home exercise programs, I felt I needed to continue to improve my strength and maintain my weight. I had found exercising at home to be monotonous and boring. But I know I needed something. I needed to stay fit even though I wasn’t playing softball three nights a week, or bowling like in the good old days. I had left my mountain biking friends behind. I thirsted for a routine that I could feel excited about.
A good friend of mine who I have known for many years really surprised me. He carried around a lot of weight, and over time he became slimmer and more fit. Soon, I was seeing pictures of him competing in intense hardcore strength and endurance competitions. He was looking good. I was looking the same. He had lost at least 100 lbs. He got my attention. He mentioned his passion for CrossFit and encouraged me to give it a try.
I decided to try it. I thought I’d give it a month or two but it’s been over a year. I feel and look stronger. I find the tasks assigned keep me interested. It’s far from monotonous, as each day varies and I’ve met a good team of people in this box. Being deaf, it’s always intimidating to join a new circle. I feel this group and any group that participates in the challenge of CrossFit tends to be welcoming. It’s not a competition against others but a competition with self. I surprised myself. I knew I was bit overweight when I first joined and didn’t notice how different I looked until recently when someone took a picture of me. I was surprised to see how different I look compared to the old me. Still working on the six pack, but I’m sure they’ll add some challenges and get me squared away. Just do it.

My name is Carlos Dominguez, this is my story and I’m sticking to it. I’m almost 50 years old, in a shape that most would consider round. I have not seen the inside of a gym since Clinton was president, first term. On August 1, 2014, I started a weight loss competition at work that would last 90 days. I knew I had to do something different in order to have a chance to win. On the advice of Philip and Karolin, I walked into CrossFit Coveted with my wife, Karen, on August 8th. I met with Annie and Elliot and told them what my goal was. I also told Coach Elliot that I was lazy by nature and most likely I would give up. He gave me a perplexed look and continued telling me what to expect. Clearly, he wasn’t taking “give up” for an answer.
After our first hour workout, we were tired and sweaty and soon to be sore, but we decided to go ahead and join. The staff at CrossFit Coveted was warm, welcoming and knowledgeable, as were the members. Everybody was very encouraging, and they would help out in any way they could. Before I left that first day, Annie gave me diet advice that I took to heart. Eleven weeks of going to CrossFit Coveted three to four times a week with my wife and eating the right kinds of food, and we were getting in shape!
The weigh-in was just days away and the final push wouldn’t have happened without Coach Jonathan pushing me. The morning of the weigh-in October 31 2014, I got on the scale at work in front of everybody. According to the scale, I had lost 47 pounds since August 1st, and I ended up winning the competition! I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my wife, family, and friends for their support.
And none of it would have been possible if it wasn’t for the entire staff and my new friends at CrossFit Coveted. It’s been a couple of weeks since the competition ended, and I’m still eating right and going to the gym three to four times a week.
